Overview

Mechatronics engineering at McMaster combines electrical, mechanical, and software engineering to design and build intelligent machines, with a strong emphasis on software across all areas. Through hands-on labs, design projects, and team-based problem-solving you will develop practical skills in robotics, automation, and automotive systems. The program prepares graduates to create smart engineering solutions that drive innovation in manufacturing, transportation, and advanced technology industries.

What you'll learn

Study an interdisciplinary field that integrates electrical, mechanical, and software engineering to design and control intelligent systems and machines. 

Study core topics such as circuits, mechanics, programming, control systems, and embedded systems, building from foundational engineering principles to advanced system integration. The program also connects to areas like robotics, automation, and machine intelligence, with opportunities to explore computing and AI applications in engineered systems.

All students in McMaster’s undergraduate engineering programs participate in a common first year — Engineering 1. Build a solid base in the fundamentals of engineering disciplines and get exposed to engineering design work right at the start of your degree.

MECHTRON 3DX4 – Dynamic Models and Control of Physical Systems  

Explore how real-world systems behave and how engineers design controllers to regulate motion, stability and performance in applications like robotics and automation.

MECHTON 3K03 – Robotics  

Study the principles behind robotic systems, including sensing, actuation and control, while designing and analyzing robotic behaviour in practical applications.

MECHTON 3TB4 – Embedded Systems Design II 

Build and program embedded hardware systems, integrating sensors, microcontrollers and software to create intelligent, responsive devices.  

Get practical experience and grow your portfolio with interdisciplinary design courses. All students in a Bachelor of Engineering take four project-based design courses:

1. ENGINEER 1P13: Integrated Cornerstone Design Projects in Engineering

2. ENGINEER 2PX3: Engineering Design 2: Communications and Societal Impact

3. ENGINEER 3PX3: Engineering Design 2: Engineering Economics

4. Capstone project (year-long design project)
