Veronika Czerneda Staff Award for Outstanding Service
This award, established in memory of Veronika Czerneda, honours staff who exemplify dedication and service to the Faculty.

Recipient: Michelle Whalen, Graduate Assistant, Academic, Department of Chemical Engineering
Michelle Whalen has been a cornerstone of the department for over 11 years and a valued member of McMaster for more than 25. Her expertise and commitment have shaped countless processes and supported students and colleagues alike. During a year of significant transition, Whalen balanced her responsibilities while mentoring new staff and ensuring continuity in critical operations. Her calm, proactive approach and genuine care have earned admiration across the department.
Faculty of Engineering Research Achievement Award
Recipient: Mehdi Narimani, Canada Research Chair in High Power Converters and Motor Drives, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering
Mehdi Narimani has achieved international recognition for pioneering work in electric vehicle powertrains, renewable energy systems, and high-power converter technologies. With over 9,200 citations, an h-index of 41, and more than $30 million in research funding, his impact is profound. Beyond research, Narimani is a dedicated mentor, supervising over 30 PhD students and earning Gold on the Dean’s Doctoral Mentoring Honour Roll in 2023. His leadership in IEEE and university governance reflects his commitment to advancing knowledge and supporting future innovators.

Faculty of Engineering Exceptional Service Award

Recipient: Marilyn Lightstone, Professor, Mechanical Engineering
Marilyn Lightstone’s contributions have transformed student experiences and departmental culture. As Undergraduate Advisor and Associate Chair, she introduced initiatives like “Meet the Profs Night” and expanded professional skills training. As Department Chair, she revitalized hiring practices, championed diversity, and increased the number of women faculty from two to six. Her inclusive approach has influenced universities nationwide. Lightstone also pioneered mentoring programs that evolved into the Fireball Academy, leaving a legacy of support and innovation.
Faculty of Engineering Special Achievement Award for Teaching Excellence
Recipient: Nicola Nicolici, Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering
Since joining McMaster in 2001, Nicola has demonstrated unwavering dedication to student success through his teaching in digital systems and computer systems integration. His course “Digital Systems Design” is widely regarded by students as “challenging yet deeply rewarding.” Nicolici’s approachable demeanor and personalized support foster an environment where students feel empowered to tackle complex concepts and develop practical skills. His leadership in creating the “Computer Systems Integration Project” has provided transformative, real-world learning experiences that bridge theory and application.


Recipient: Mohamed Ezzeldin, Associate Professor, Civil Engineering
Mohamed Ezzeldin has transformed his courses by incorporating experiential learning opportunities such as field trips, industry partnerships and hands-on competitions. His leadership as Faculty Advisor for the Undergraduate Seismic Design Team led McMaster to its first-ever top-ten finish in an international competition. Known for his accessibility and responsiveness, Ezzeldin goes above and beyond to support learners, even adjusting his teaching schedule during Ramadan. His outstanding evaluations, McMaster Student Union Excellence in Teaching Award, and consistent praise from students highlight his ability to create an inclusive, engaging and impactful learning environment.
Faculty of Engineering Entrepreneurship Award
Recipient: Wael El-Dakhakhni, Professor, Civil Engineering
Wael El-Dakhakhni’s entrepreneurial leadership has resulted in two startups, Resiliō and RAPBUILD, addressing global challenges in climate resilience and housing. He and his trainees have co-invented four McMaster technologies, including AI-powered flood warning systems and WHO-adopted health solutions. El-Dakhakhni’s efforts have cultivated an entrepreneurial mindset among students, creating transformative opportunities for careers and innovation.
