- Master of Applied Science (Co-op Available)
Also called the “Research Masters,” the MASc has a nominal duration of 24 months (6 semesters) after the Bachelor’s degree. The MASc program consists of three one-term graduate courses and a dissertation based on research completed under the supervision of a professor. The dissertation must be an original contribution to chemical engineering and must be defended at an oral examination.

To be accepted for study, the applicant must satisfy the Graduate Admissions Committee of the Department and the University and must also be accepted for supervision by a member of the Department. In submitting an application, the applicant should carefully choose an area of research from those described on this website. Normally individual departmental members will be asked to consider an applicant for work in their laboratories on the basis of the applicant’s chosen area of study.

Students have an opportunity to bypass the MASc degree after completing 6 months and enrol directly in the Ph.D. program subject to a detailed and satisfactory review of progress in both research and course work. Full time candidates for MASc Degree are required to spend at least one academic year of graduate study at McMaster University. All MASc candidates must present a seminar lecture on a topic approved by the Department, and attend the seminars regularly.
A candidate is required to complete successfully at least three one-term courses, at least two of which should be at the 700-level. Students are required to present a thesis, which constitutes an original contribution to chemical engineering. The thesis must be defended in an oral examination. Completion of the M.A.Sc. thesis typically requires six terms of full-time study.
Master’s and PhD students may complete 4 to 12 months of co-op experience in various types of organizations, including corporations, non-profit organizations, government agencies, startups and research institutions.
