Overview

Geotechnical infrastructure faces growing challenges arising from climate change, energy
transition, and increasingly complex environmental loading. Our research develops
computational and data-driven predictive methods that integrate mechanics, multiscale
modeling, and machine learning to better understand complex geomaterial behavior and
support the design of resilient infrastructure, sustainable energy systems, and next-generation
digital twin technologies.

Block Heading

Dr. Mahdad Eghbalian received his B.Sc. (2009) in Civil Engineering and M.Sc. (2011) in
Structural Mechanics from Sharif University of Technology, Iran, and his Ph.D. (2019) in
Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Calgary, Canada. He subsequently served
as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Computational Geomechanics Laboratory at the University
of Calgary.

Before joining McMaster, Dr. Eghbalian was a Senior Research Scientist at Schlumberger,
where he developed advanced computational models and optimization methods for digital
twin applications in large-scale energy systems.

Dr. Eghbalian’s research lies at the intersection of computational mechanics, geomechanics,
multiscale material modeling, and mechanistic machine learning. His work has advanced
constitutive and numerical modeling of soils and rocks and has been recognized through
numerous awards, publications in leading journals, and U.S. patent applications.

Dr. Eghbalian is passionate about mentoring students and fostering an inclusive research
environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Outside the university, Dr. Eghbalian enjoys playing soccer, following the English Premier
League, and staying active through strength training.
