McMaster University’s Faculty of Engineering has launched a new course to support students as they begin their first co-op experiences. Developed by the Centre for Career Growth and Experience (the Centre), the Co-op Success Course is designed to help students navigate the transition from classroom to workplace with confidence and clarity.
Delivered online in an asynchronous format, the course features three modules, including topics like goal setting, professional etiquette, writing a professional email, navigating difficult conversations, managing supervisor feedback, and human and employee rights.
“This Co-op Success Course was created in response to student feedback and aims to equip learners with the tools they need to thrive in their co-op experiences,” says Linda Crawford, Manager, Career Education and Professional Development at the Centre. “We want students to feel prepared and supported as they take this important step in their professional journey.”
Co-op a cornerstone of the McMaster Engineering experience
With approximately 93% of undergraduate engineering students enrolled in co-op, McMaster Engineering has the third-largest co-op program in Canada, connecting learners with more than 1,300 industry-leading employers.
“Co-op experiences, often with leading employers, are integral to the Mac Eng journey,” says Stephanie Harper, Associate Director of the Centre. “By equipping our students with relevant and timely knowledge and skills, we ensure they maximize their learning and professional growth while working.”
While tailored to first-time co-op students, Co-op Success is being made available to any student on a work term this fall. Approximately 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students from McMaster Engineering programs will be on a co-op work term starting this month. “There’s valuable information for all our students, whether it’s new learning or reminders as returning co-op students encounter new environments and teams,” says Crawford.
By equipping our students with relevant and timely knowledge and skills, we ensure they maximize their learning and professional growth while working.
The Co-op Success Course is part of a broader suite of offerings from the Centre, which also includes Engineers in the Community, a professional development course designed for upper-year students that encourages them to consider the needs of the diverse populations they serve in their daily practice.
