Master of Applied Science in Biomedical Engineering
Tell us a bit about yourself and your current role in Mac Eng:
My name is Jenna Harris, and I am a graduate student at McMaster’s School of Biomedical Engineering. My research focuses on electrochemical biosensors – devices that can help reduce the time and money required to diagnose and monitor health conditions.
Under the supervision of Dr. Leyla Soleymani, I am working on a team to develop a point-of-care test for African Swine Fever Virus, which has become a major concern in various regions across the globe. I also completed my undergraduate degree at McMaster with a double major in Biomedical Engineering and Engineering Physics.
In the future, I hope to take what I learned from both of my degrees and pursue a career as a researcher in the public sector. Outside of academics, I am very passionate about dance, which I have been doing for about two decades. Besides being a creative outlet, it has been an amazing way to make friends.
What advice do you have for Black Students thinking of pursuing engineering?
There are tons of Black engineers out there who are willing and able to mentor you. Don’t be scared to reach out to people!

Can you share an experience where you felt particularly supported or included within the McMaster community?
When I walked across the stage at the Black Graduation ceremony, I could really feel the support from the whole community – not just my friends and family. It was definitely one of my favourite experiences during my time at McMaster.
Why does representation matter in engineering and at McMaster?
Systemic bias toward the Black community shows up in all fields of study, and there are serious consequences when biased research is used to inform decisions. For engineering, in particular, more Black engineers will help with addressing this problem in new technologies.
What initiatives or resources at McMaster have you found helpful in supporting your journey?
The Black Student Success Centre has been a big source of community and support during my time at McMaster.
