Les Shemilt Lectureship

In honour of Professor Shemilt and Dean Emeritus of the Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University, this annual lectureship showcases great lectures from the field of chemical engineering and their contributions.

The Shemilt lectures series was established in 2013 to recognize the enormous contributions of the late Professor Les Shemilt to our Department, University, and the chemical engineering profession across Canada.  Professor Shemilt started his academic career as a faculty member at the UBC, then founded the Dept of Chemical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick where he remained for 10 years, before being appointed Dean of Engineering at McMaster – a position he served for 10 years.  Les Shemilt served as President of the CIC, was the recipient of 3 honorary doctorates and was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1991.  An interesting bit of trivia that Professor Schemilt had a particular interest in the literature and mythology surrounding Sherlock Holmes, and was a longstanding member of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, and The Bootmakers of Toronto – which is a literary society devoted to Sherlock Holmes.
