Choose your own adventure and customize your day with Mac Eng!

Navigate campus at your own pace while exploring the various Faculty of Engineering buildings, facilities, student spaces, and more. Our volunteers will be stationed at all marked locations listed on our Discover Mac Eng map to educate you on the space, share their experiences, and answer questions!

Start at the Mac Eng Welcome & Info Booth in JHE Lobby to learn more about what you can discover and pick up a map to collect stamps throughout the day to participate in some fun prize draws including a McMaster sweater, a JBL speaker, and more!

How to make the most of discovering Mac Eng areas?

  • From JHE Lobby, pick up a map and checklist of all the locations that you can visit and review where you want to go!
    • Register your map (contact information) at the table to automatically get one entry in the prize draw.
  • Utilize the provided map, look for signage and Mac Eng flags, and ask for help along the way to get to areas you want to visit.
  • Connect with volunteers stationed at all marked locations to explain the space, share their own experiences, and answer your questions about life at Mac Eng.
  • Collect stamps at marked locations to use towards fun prizes for your participation. Every stamp gives you an extra entry to better your chances! Multiple winners will be pulled!
    • It is not required for you to visit every station to submit your map back to us. Minimum 1 stamp needs to be collected!
  • Return your map to JHE Lobby OR any Discover Mac Eng station marked on your map to submit your entries once you are finishing your day. Draw will happen the following week and the winners will be contacted via email.

If you are having any troubles, please do not hesitate to ask the volunteers for support, or return back to the Mac Eng Welcome & Info Booth in JHE Lobby for any help.

Each of our Faculty of Engineering programs is giving a brief 30-40 minute presentation to get you familiar with the exciting opportunities for our students. Multiple sessions available, repeating information.

Please note, that if you have visited an open house recently (ex. Fall Preview Days) the content of the sessions is the same.

Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Info Sessions – 11:00 & 1:00 in ETB 534
Learn about the BTech program and how to create technological advancements in the three direct-entry programs, including Automotive & Vehicle Engineering Technology, Automation Systems Engineering Technology, and Biotechnology.

Computer Science Info Sessions – 12:00 & 2:00 in ITB 137
Computer Science takes the theoretical and brings it to life in practical applications. It is a direct-entry four year program where students learn programming, software design, systems and theoretical foundations.

Engineering I Info Sessions – 11:00 & 1:00 & 2:30 in BSB 147
Learn about first-year engineering and beyond as we explore the twelve Engineering disciplines, including: Chemical, Chemical & Bioengineering, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Software, Management and Society.

Integrated Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences (iBioMed) Info Sessions – 10:30 & 1:00 in MDCL 1105
Learn more about Canada’s first truly integrated biomedical engineering and health sciences program. Co-Director Dr. Colin McDonald will talk about what to expect in your first year, specializations in second year and where you can go with an iBioMed degree. 

Faculty of Engineering Co-op Info Sessions – 12:00 & 2:00 in JHE 376
Preparing students for the future of work, today! Engineering Co-op & Career Services helps students gain meaningful work experience and develop industry-specific skills before they graduate. In the 2022/2023 academic year, there were 4000+ work terms completed by 2,500 undergraduate and graduate.

In JHE 109A (enter from front of JHE), you will find the Department Showcase to connect with faculty, staff and current students from the Faculty of Engineering (including iBioMed) in all of our programs and disciplines. You can find the following departments in this area:

ABB C104 iBioMed Design Studio | 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

  • All the iBioMed program’s lab spaces are coming together in our Design Studio Open House! Talk to our lab techs, current students and faculty and learn about the projects conducted at the Genetic Engineering Lab, Design Studio, Medical Imaging & Biomaterials Lab and Medical Instrumentation/Robotics Lab. 
  • Our Engineering Design Studio will unfortunately not open, so we recommend guests interested in Engineering 1 to visit the iBioMed Design Studio as well!

ETB 311 Biotechnology Lab | 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM

  • The Application of Biotechnology and Next-generation Biomanufacturing. Demonstrations include vaccine production via bioreactor culture, Bacterial system in producing therapeutic biopharmaceuticals, 3D cancer cell spheroid and tissue engineering, biosensor development for disease diagnosis. 

ETB Software Design Lab | 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM (Timing & Location TBC)

  • Hands-on intro to Model-Driven Development:  learn how theoretical concepts are practically used to model software applications, thereby improving software quality and reducing development time.
  • Try out CS1XD3 projects and talk to their creators about how they used Design Thinking to really understand their user, including how to interview, prototype and seek feedback.
  • Meet volunteers from the student club McMaster Start Coding who introduce coding to children across Canada and around the world, using the Algebraic Thinking curriculum developed at Mac.

ITB Annex McMaster RC Autonomous Electrified Vehicle (MacAEV) | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

  • The McMaster Autonomous Electrified Vehicle (MacAEV) demonstration showcases self-driving capabilities of a 1/10th scale vehicle developed in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. You will have the chance to see the MacAEV autonomously navigating the hallways of the department, zig zagging through obstacles along the way!
  • The MacAEV is used for undergraduate education and graduate-level research in autonomous and electrified vehicles, as well as in autonomous robotic systems. The vehicle is equipped with a powerful on-board computer, state-of-the-art sensors such as a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) device, an RGB-Depth camera and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), some of the very same technologies that will empower future self-driving vehicles. Come and see how we are training engineers that will help shape the future of transportation.

JHE 220 Water Lab | 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM 

  • Environmental Systems Laboratory in the department of Civil Engineering is designed for a variety of water analyses. The laboratory has both bench- and pilot-scale unit processes for water and wastewater treatment and is equipped for a range of wet chemistry analyses. 

JHE A106 Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Experiment Lab | 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

  • Our state of the art undergraduate experiment lab has scaled-down versions of numerous industrial engineering processes, such as a climbing film evaporator (fruit juice concentration and other low-boiling applications), distillation column (product purification and separation), polymer extruder (injection molding/forming polymer products), fuel cell (energy production), bubble column (reaction and mixing control), fluid circuit (pump and valve design), and many others!

MARC (McMaster Automotive Research Centre) | 1 hour tour at 12:00 PM & 2:00 PM A nearby off-campus location, by organized bus only. Limited space available, first come first serve. Bus leaving campus to MARC @ 12:00 p.m. & 2:00 p.m. from outside of GHC garage bay. Approx. 1 hour tour.

  • MARC 155A – Automotive Lab 
    • This laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art experimental learning resources in the fields of thermodynamics, heat transfer, mechanical vibration, fluid mechanics, combustion engineering, as well as hybrid and electric vehicle dynamics. 
  • MARC 155B – Manufacturing Lab 
    • This laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge facilities for additive manufacturing and machining, along with various manufacturing equipment tailored for the capstone design and manufacturing course. 
  • MARC 269 – PACE Computer Lab 
    • The computer laboratory features high-performance computers equipped with industrial software and autonomous vehicle instrumentation. 

Nuclear Science @ the McMaster Nuclear Reactor | 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM

  • East lobby of the Nuclear Research Building (go through JHE for easiest access)
  • Visit the Nuclear Research building to learn about how the McMaster Nuclear Reactor and our other facilities use the power of nuclear energy to tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues such as clean energy, precision medicine, materials research, and more! We will have interactive demonstrations so you can see how radiation exists in our lives and how we can use it in science and engineering. In addition, we will provide information about the education programs that we support at McMaster.

Parking & Campus Directions

The address of McMaster University is 1280 Main St W, Hamilton, ON L8S 4L8.  Please be mindful of traffic signs while on campus, as some streets are only allowed to be used by city buses and campus services. 

Free parking will be available in Lots M, N, and P and shuttle buses will loop from the parking lots to the Welcome Tent all day. This Welcome Tent is located in the center of campus and will provide you information to our entire campus-wide May@Mac agendas and details. Other parking lots are available, but will require payment.

Using public transportation? There are a handful of Hamilton city buses (HSR) stops and a GO Bus Station right on campus!

Please review the map of campus here in advance to get a bit familiar with where various buildings may be. You can input our buildings into google maps as well.
