76 McMaster Engineering researchers named among the world’s top 2 per cent

The database recognizes the long-term career performance of scientists around the world, living or deceased, who are the most-cited authors in their disciplines between 1965 and 2020.

McMaster Engineering researchers have, once again, been named among the world’s top scientists, according to an annual database published by Stanford University.

Seventy-six researchers affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University are among the world’s top 100,000 — or two per cent — of scientific experts in their disciplines. This represents an increase from last year’s total of 67 McMaster Engineering researchers on the list.

A collaborative effort of Stanford University and Elsevier, the database recognizes the long-term career performance of scientists around the world, living or deceased, who are the most-cited authors in their disciplines between 1965 and 2020.

“Congratulations to everyone on the list,” says Heather Sheardown, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. “This achievement speaks volumes about our research at McMaster Engineering — and the calibre of our people.”

Of the 76 McMaster Engineering researchers on the list, 37 are current faculty members, up from last year’s result of 32. Others on the list are retired, former, or deceased faculty members.

“These results show that our work over the decades has been recognized all over the world,” says Sheardown. She holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Ophthalmic Biomaterials and Drug Delivery Systems, and is among the researchers named on the list. “We clearly punch above our weight.”

According to its 2021 annual report, the Faculty of Engineering has 185 faculty members. It attracts $42.6 million in external research funding, it’s home to 32 research chairs and more than 130 active research collaborations, and it encompasses 20 engineering-affiliated research centres and institutes.

Research is clustered around these eight themes: Advanced Manufacturing, Digital & Smart Systems, Energy, Environment, Health & Bio-innovation, Infrastructure, Micro-Nano-Systems, and Transportation.

Among the top 100,000, a total of 341 researchers are affiliated with McMaster University — up from 300 in last year’s list. McMaster has been named Canada’s most research-intensive university for the past four years.

The first edition of the database was published in 2019 by a team led by John Ioannidis of the Statistics and Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS). The data was collected from the Scopus database of nearly seven million authors, of which the top 100,000 were analyzed.
