Overview

Sean is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. As part of the Division in Education and Innovation he teaches courses on human-centred design, creative problem solving and strategic foresight in the iBioMed program and the Michael G. DeGroote Health Leadership Academy.  He is a MacPherson Fellow leading educational research and capacity-building activities that advance designerly ways of teaching and learning.

He earned his BHSc. (Hons.) degree from McMaster in 2004 and a Master’s degree in 2007 from the University of Toronto, specializing in inquiry-based learning and complexity science. Sean completed his SSHRC-funded PhD in Arts Education at Simon Fraser University in 2014 with research focused on the humanistic, artistic, embodied and spiritual dimensions of education.

He holds a President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (Course or Resource Design), as well as the national Alan Blizzard award for collaborative course development and contributions to teaching from the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE).

Sean has certification in solution-focused coaching, mindfulness education, and creative problem solving.  Prior to McMaster, he redesigned and managed the Studio Y Fellowship at MaRS Discovery District.  Sean has also served as faculty at Kwantlen Polytechnic University teaching leadership, group dynamics, and expressive arts.  He is currently an associate editor with Art Research International.
