Julia Lisboa

Mechatronics & Biomedical Engineering, Level II (Oakville, ON)

All the profs and iBioMed students are some of the most fun and supportive people I've ever met! They always support in your success and push you to be the best you can be.

Favourite McMaster Engineering moment/memory?

Seeing the entire engineering faculty together at Faculty Fest during Welcome Week! It was an awesome introduction to what my time at McMaster would be like and showed what a strong and spirited community the #fireballfamily is :)

What do you love most about the iBioMed program?

It's hard to choose between the academics and the people... the curriculum and interdisciplinary approach to learning combines engineering and health sciences perfectly. The design projects are super fun and an awesome way to practice technical skills and get experience. Favourite design project you have had the opportunity to work on within your courses?

My favourite design project was definitely the wearable device project; Track and Field. The prompt was very open ended and allowed my group to be creative in coming up with our design solution. I had such a great team that put so much effort into it to and we were able to develop an awesome product!

How have you found balance in managing your demanding academic schedule?

Balancing my academic schedule with clubs and downtime is a challenge but definitely do-able. By prioritizing tasks and putting everything in an agenda (GOOGLE CALENDAR) helps me to keep track of things and complete tasks in order of importance.

What do you wish you knew in your first year that you know now?

First year was such an awesome experience! I wish I had taken more time to enjoy the little things like hanging out with my roommate in residence, going to Centro with friends and working at all hours of the night on design projects. Most of the time, its not what you learn in class that's memorable, but your experiences and the people you spend time with outside the classroom that make university fun!

What's something special and fun we should know about you?

My last name 'Lisboa' is the capital city of Portugal. But don't let that fool you, I'm also half Croatian and can speak little bit of it too. I've been to each of the countries 4 times and love travelling to new places : )
