Carmen Bracho (Mechanical Engineering & Management)

While I knew I wanted to be an Engineer, I still deeply valued what I could learn from business classes. The fact that McMaster offers the five-year program option with Management played a significant role in my decision, as I was able to pursue an Engineering degree, while taking the core courses of a commerce degree.

Your DECA experience: "My DECA experience was a big highlight of my last two high school years. Through DECA, I was able to meet like-minded individuals that were dedicated, personable, and intelligent. I was also advised by great teachers that helped us learn more about our area of interest, beyond what is taught at a high school level. Overall, I was able to take away great learning opportunities and friendships that I still maintain 5 years later."

Why McMaster?: "I decided to go to McMaster because I had always been interested in the math and science courses, as well as business classes. So while I knew I wanted to be an Engineer, I still deeply valued what I could learn from business classes. The fact that McMaster offers the five-year program option with Management played a significant role in my decision, as I was able to pursue an Engineering degree, while taking the core courses of a commerce degree."

How did DECA help prepare you for your university program?: DECA helped me prepared by sharpening my presentation and communication skills through the case competitions. These competitions also allowed me to develop the ability to think on the spot creatively, which I found to be very useful when I first began interviewing for co-op positions in my first year of studies. I also learned self-directed study, since oftentimes the best way to prepare for the examination portion of the test is to seek additional information about the area of business I was competing in."
