A project that protects the environment: As part of the Master’s in Engineering and Public Policy program, Chris is working with the Hamilton Conservation Authority on policy recommendations for large-scale storm water management. “Luckily, the policy frameworks that guide storm water management in Ontario and in Hamilton are actually really supportive of sustainable techniques. In terms of my recommendations, there will be small tweaks to existing policy languages. I would also recommend establishing overarching bodies to help guide policy and the sharing of ideas.”

Chris’ passion for policy and the environment go beyond the classroom. Currently, he works for Stewards of Cootes Watershed, a local nonprofit organization based in Dundas, Ontario. “We do environmental work for the community such as volunteer clean ups and organizing community events.The nonprofit’s long term goal is to solve systemic watershed stressors in the community. “A big part of my job [at Stewards of Cootes Watershed] is working with community members, the municipality and other stakeholders to solve problems within the field.”

Why W Booth: “The amount of diversity we have at W Booth is incredible. I'm one of three students from Canada so the different perspectives from all over the world is absolutely incredible. The faculty are all practitioners and industry people who became academics so they bring this practicality to everything that we're doing.”  

Why McMaster: “I think McMaster Engineering is renowned. I'm a Hamilton native. I grew up in Ancaster and the reputation of the faculty has always been prominent in the community. That really drew me here. Reading about the program online was also really helpful and I met with some faculty members who just kind of sold it.”

A proud Hamiltonian: “I absolutely love Hamilton. I love all of the nature we have. I love riding my mountain bike in the Dundas Valley. I like to head up the local water bodies and do some fishing and kayaking. We also have many really smart people working to preserve it and make the community better. I love all the restaurants downtown. My favourite is The Mule. I love tacos.”

Peer mentorship: “The main focus of our leadership class was on mentorship. We worked with one of our peers and helped one another achieve three goals. You get to really know someone on a more personal level and I think we all grew with that experience.”

A confident communicator: “I think the biggest skill I've gained over my year here is just confidence. I've become a much better communicator. We've had so many speaking opportunities where we've shared our ideas. I also feel more confident going into the workplace than I did before we started.”

What’s next: “I'm really interested in working in policy at the municipal level. I think that's where all of the action is in terms of policy. Municipalities take care of so much governance of our day-to-day lives. It's something that has always interested me.”
