B.Tech grad leads testing of luxury jets

Bombardier’s Global 7500 is the world’s largest and longest-range business jet, with a state-of-the-art fly-by-wire system and a luxurious custom interior.

It also has a McMaster Bachelor of Technology grad managing its Aircraft Functional Test program.

As Aircraft Functional Test Operations Manager, Mayu Jeyakumar leads a team of aircraft mechanics, engineers and avionics technicians responsible for testing the plane’s various flight and safety systems. These include all Electrical, Avionics, Hydraulics, Flight Controls and Fuel systems before delivery into Pre-flight.

“Once all the functional tests procedures are completed and inspected, the aircraft is released for flight,” says the 2012 graduate of the B.Tech Automotive and Vehicle Technology program.

The position is his “dream job,” says Jeyakumar, who joined Bombardier in 2013 and has spent the last seven years immersed in the development and launch of the new jet.

As a child, I always dreamed to work in aerospace, and wanted to build the next generation of aircrafts,” he says. “I love leading a team to solve technical problems and release an aircraft into pre-flight. There are new challenges every day and you need to be familiar with the entire aircraft system rather than just one specific system.

“One day you might be troubleshooting the source of a hydraulic leak, and the next day troubleshooting why the fly-by-wire system is not working.”

After graduating from the B.Tech program – which he says gave him the skills to become an effective technical leader – he added an MBA to his resume.

At Bombardier he has moved through a series of positions and successfully led the first “Power ON” of the initial flight test vehicle in 2017.

As a manager, Jeyakumar is now recruiting other B.Tech alumni and co-op students to join the company.

“These new grads and students demonstrate a level of skill that is far beyond their colleagues from other engineering universities who specialize in aerospace,” he says.
