BTech Information Systems | Giving new software a smooth start

New software is always intended to make things better, faster and more functional. But when its introduction isn’t managed well, it can cause unexpected stumbles.

As a Release Manager for TD Canada Trust, Jawad Tariq’s job is to make sure there are no stumbles.

“My role is to manage, schedule, coordinate and implement large software releases from development to testing and then to production,” explains the 2012 grad from the BTech Information Systems program. “I also define the IT release strategies and tools to help drive release management at the bank and to help manage risks.”

After launching his career as a software developer, Tariq supplemented his coding knowledge to move into the role of build specialist, which helped him recognize the importance of fast, reliable software releases.

“This led me to become a full-fledged DevOps and Senior Release engineer, where I helped design and architect the build automation for my company.

“I found that working with the latest tools and technology still required someone to help lead and coordinate to ensure the organization was pushing out a reliable product, which is why I went into release management.”

Along with taking part in DevOps meetups around Toronto, Tariq uses his spare time to indulge his creative side through writing and illustration.

“I recently released my first children’s book, Raheem and his Magic Shoes, which is available on Amazon,” he says. “I’m very passionate about this project as it was a message I wanted to share and a new skill set I wanted to learn.”

The book is about basketball, a subject Tariq knows well as an avid basketball player and coach.

He urges young people to be prepared to try new things.

“My best advice for students is not to be afraid to fail. When we fail, we learn, we grow and we move on. The goal is to fail as fast as possible,” he says.
