W Booth School Director Addresses Gathering of Leading ManufacturersMay 14, 2018

The W Booth School contributed to the success of the sixth annual Manufacturing Forum and Industry Open House hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute on May 9.

The event attracted more than 300 attendees, including senior business executives charting the future of advanced manufacturing in Southern Ontario and beyond.

Dr. Mo Elbestawi, Director of the W Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology at McMaster University, was a featured speaker on a panel devoted to the topic of collaboration in the evolving field of engineering education. He spoke about the school’s focus on experiential learning through hands-on projects with industry partners, including a growing number of manufacturers keen to benefit from the adoption of smart systems and innovations in digital design, rapid prototyping and 3D printing.

Dr. Elbestawi also shared the school’s near-term plans to introduce a suite of micro-credentials targeting people working in industry. These tailored offerings will help companies provide employees and suppliers with practical education and training on relevant topics. “The idea is to remain flexible and responsive,” he said.

A micro-credential devoted to carbon mitigation will be rolled out in Fall 2018. Two other micro-credentials in the pipeline are devoted to Industry 4.0 and Operations Management and Leadership respectively.

At the close of the morning program, guests were invited to tour several McMaster facilities that enable manufacturers to access opportunities for applied research and collaborative problem-solving. The W Booth School welcomed attendees to its Learning Factory, a space to experience the world of smart manufacturing. This new facility, located in the Engineering Technology Building, is central to the school’s leadership in the discipline of Industry 4.0.
