Tom Wanyama named Lab Director for the Learning FactoryMarch 12, 2021

Tom Wanyama, Chair of the Automation Engineering Technology program in the W Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology, has been selected to lead the Learning Factory as the Lab Director.

The Learning Factory is world-class facility that simulates the factory of the future, with several manufacturing and post-processing stations for students to work with. The manufacturing stations have equipment for metal additive manufacturing, CNC machine tooling, 3D printing, injection molding, laser cutting and electronics.

As the lab director, Wanyama will manage the planning and operation of the Learning Factory.

“I am honoured to have been considered for this role and to be part of an amazing faculty where students have access to a real-life factory designed to support teaching and learning,” says Wanyama, who joined the W Booth School in 2012 as an assistant professor.

Since he joined the W Booth School, Wanyama has developed Industry 4.0 content for courses, led the creation of the new Smart System stream within the Automation Engineering Technology program and participated in the creation of the Master of Engineering in Systems and Technology program.

He has also played a key role in helping to reduce faculty teaching load, supervising master’s projects, and leading research geared towards teaching industrial automation systems.

"We are thrilled that Tom will now bring his knowledge and experience to the planning and operation of the Learning Factory,” says Brian Baetz, the director of the W Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology.
