A few short years ago, Tito Olaleye was a hard-working engineering student anxious about her future.
Like many others, she worried about her prospects in the workforce, her lack of job experience and her inability to find a co-op placement.
But today, a software test analyst in the second year of her career, the 2016 Electrical and Biomedical Engineering grad looks back on her younger self and offers reassuring words for today’s anxious students.
“I wish I knew then not to worry so much,” she says. “I tried so hard to find a co-op or internship job but nothing was working out. So I worked hard in school, built up my grades, volunteered for different events and did lots of side projects.
“My volunteer experience built up my soft skills and I believe that’s why I was hired for this job,” she adds.
“I wish I knew then that even if things weren’t going as well for me as they were for my peers, life has a way of working itself out.”
After graduating, Olaleye landed a position with the consulting company FDM Group. For the last 15 months, she’s been working with client BMO Financial Services on a team responsible for building and managing applications involved in commercial lending.
“I never thought I’d end up in the financial sector and yet, here I am,” she says. “The best part is that my current manager is amazing at giving me a chance to try new things. My team is working on lots of exciting projects and I’m really interested in seeing how artificial intelligence and data analytics can make the lending process more efficient.”
Her advice to today’s students: keep an open mind when considering career opportunities.
“If you’re not fixated on a certain job or title, it’s amazing the kind of opportunities and challenges you find yourself taking on.”
