About seven years ago, while completing his master’s degree in Medical Biophysics, Shawn Keating realized that he really didn’t enjoy the day-to-day grind of working in a lab.
But his graduate degree – which followed a 2010 BEng in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering and a 2006 BSc – showed him what he did like: presenting and discussing technical material with his mentors and colleagues.
That shift in career perspective led to his current position leading the global sales engineering team at Axis Communication, a tech manufacturer in the security realm.
“After I graduated I looked for roles where I could work with technology, but in a more customer-facing way,” says Shawn. “Sales Engineer was a natural fit and I found the physical security industry almost by accident. But it’s a great industry to work in as it combines a lot of technologies such as imaging, audio, IT networking, and software development into intelligent security systems capable of detecting and, in some cases, preventing crime.”
The next shift in perspective came as he travelled the world in his role with the global manufacturer, and then eventually moved to the company headquarters in Lund, Sweden.
“It’s great to gather perspective on how business is done in other parts of the world, as it’s very easy to get caught up in the North American perspective,” he says.
Axis manufactures audio and video network devices, as well as providing video management and analytics software. Shawn’s current focus is on supporting technical teams globally as they design and develop complex security systems for customers around the world.
“My advice to students is to keep an open mind about where you want to be in five years,” he says. “You might think you know, but if you stick too closely to a plan you may end up missing out on some great opportunities.
“And if you don’t know, that’s okay too. It’s a big, dynamic world out there and you never know what’s around the next corner.”
