A love of research and problem solving led Sameh Saad from Egypt to McMaster, where he completed his master’s degree in mechanical engineering in 2006. He then added a PhD (University of Toronto) and worked as a post-doctoral fellow (University of Waterloo).
But in 2015, he left the academic world to take a job as director of research and development at Betterfrost Technologies.
“I realized that most research ideas need to be put into practical use and be available to everyone,” he says. “My mandate with Betterfrost has been to build the R&D team and further develop and commercialize research ideas dealing with removing ice from surfaces.
“We initially focused on refrigeration but then moved to automotive, solar, and aerospace so far, with more potential in the future.”
Saad says his understanding of product development has helped him to contribute to the company’s success in commercializing research ideas and successfully marketing products.
Along with managing day-to-day R&D operations, he oversees the company’s patent strategy and handles collaborative projects underway with government and educational institutions.
“I really enjoy what I currently do in making sure these research ideas are brought to life and best used for the benefit of society overall.”
His advice for students is to seek to understand how theory is applied in practice, as well as how the business side eventually drives innovation in new and interesting ways.
“Co-op is your key to understanding how industry works,” Saad adds.
