Does your bank seem able to predict your every need?
If so, you might thank Mohammadreza Dadkhah. Oh yes, and also artificial intelligence and data analytics.
As director of data science with RBC, Dadkhah is the technical lead on data science projects that help the bank improve customer satisfaction and drive business value.
“I love that data science supports decision making based on facts and scientific methods, and that we get involved with the essence of the problem as much as the technical tools to find the solution,” he says.
When he began his engineering studies in Iran in 2001, Dadkhah never envisioned working as a data scientist. But by the time he earned his electrical engineering PhD at McMaster in 2012, skills in AI and data analysis were highly sought after.
That led him to join a startup working on developing hardware and algorithms to help people with epilepsy.
“The company was small with an ambitious goal,” says Dadkhah. “We didn’t have budget to hire many people, so I had to work on the hardware, software and algorithms, as well as help with the business development.
“We built the company from the ground up and it was a great learning experience that I still benefit from.”
Five years ago, he joined RBC as a data scientist, eventually moving his way up to the director role.
He encourages students with a strong sense of curiosity and interest in problem solving to consider the field.
“If you have passion for science, engineering and technology but also want to work on real-life problems, data science is a good fit for you,” he says.
