Electric vehicles are widely seen as the future of transportation, but there’s still plenty of logistical hurdles before the world can fully transition to plug-in cars.
Some of that work is being done by Michael Sefin. The 2019 electrical engineering grad has recently joined the e-mobility team at global technology company ABB, working as an EV Service Engineer.
“My role includes commissioning, troubleshooting, and recommending technical strategies for establishing charging stations across the province,” says Sefin, who added a master’s degree to his resume in 2021.
“I love the real-life application of what are doing to help reduce transportation emissions and fight climate change,” he adds. “This has a real effect on people and is something I’m proud to be working on.”
Sefin launched his career in the utility sector, working for stints at Toronto Hydro and Alectra. He says people have so far been the highlight of his working life.
“I have met some incredible people that I still keep in touch with, and that I can always count on for good advice and mentorship,” he says.
“What surprised me at work is that people are much kinder than you would anticipate and are always willing to lend a helping hand or word of advice if you simply ask.”
In his spare time, Sefin volunteers at his community church as a mentor for teenage boys.
The program connects young adults with high school students, to offer support around mental health, spirituality and social issues.
“We meet once a week for a chat and to lend an ear about any problems they face in life,” he says. The kids really enjoy having an ‘older brother’ figure that they can relate to and count on for advice.”
His advice for students is to keep an open mind and network as much as possible.
“You never know who you might meet. And everyone around you knows something that you don’t, so listen to what they have to say.”
