McMaster Engineering Student Receives ITEC 2020 Best Paper AwardNovember 3, 2020

On Friday, September 18, 2020, the IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo announced the ITEC 2020 Best Paper Awards recipients.

McMaster Civil Engineering Graduate student Mohamed Elsayed had been announced the recipient of the Student Best Paper Award. The paper, co-authored by Dr. Moataz Mohamed, investigates “The Uncertainty of Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles’ Energy consumption.”

“Using Autonomous UAVs (Drones) for last-mile parcel delivery is considered the silver bullet solution to mitigating transportation-related GHG emission and reduce traffic congestions. However, several uncertainties need to be addressed to facilitate the safe integration of UAVs in our daily lives. In our research group, we tackle UAV issues related to policy development, GHG estimation, energy consumption, routing algorithms, cost and system optimization. The ITEC study represents some of our research on UAV energy demand uncertainty under various operating contexts,” said Dr. Moataz Mohamed. “Mo’s research on autonomous UAVs system design represents an opportunity for Canada to integrate cutting edge disruptive technologies to advance the transportation industry and compete worldwide with increased efficiency and economic viability.”

“It is both exciting and humbling to be awarded by the IEEE for our work on UAVs. We are breaking new grounds, not just on an international level, but also across academic and industrial realms,” said Mohamed Elsayed.
