McMaster Engineering climbs in Maclean's program reputation rankingsOctober 16, 2020

The Faculty of Engineering is ranked 5th for program reputation in Maclean's annual rankings of Canadian engineering programs, up one spot from last year.

For the second consecutive year, McMaster Engineering is ranked 6th overall in the Maclean's best university engineering programs list for 2021, where its program reputation is ranked 5th in Canada. The Faculty retains its 6th rank in research reputation.

McMaster Engineering has gone up in the rankings over the years, rising from 8th (2018) to 7th (2019) to 6th (2020). Engineering universities are assessed by Maclean's each year based on program reputation, research reputation, publication and citation metrics.

"This year's Maclean's rankings reflects the Faculty of Engineering's continued focus on providing an incredible student experience, innovating research with impact, and educating agile global citizens who are equipped to tackle our world's greatest challenges," says Ishwar K. Puri, McMaster's dean of engineering.

"McMaster Engineering's successes are made possible by the innovative spirit and deep commitment of faculty, staff, donors and students."

Earlier this year, 11 academic disciplines in McMaster Engineering were ranked among the top 10 in Canada by ShanghaiRanking.

The Faculty recently celebrated the launch of The Pivot, the largest transformation of McMaster Engineering’s approach to education in its 60-year history. This reimagined approach to educating students aims to instill a community-focused mindset, with a special focus on entrepreneurship.

McMaster University overall rankings

This year, McMaster is ranked fourth in the Maclean’s annual rankings of Canadian universities. This is McMaster’s third year holding that position in the category for universities with a broad range of research and PhD programs, including medical schools.

McMaster joins University of Toronto, University of British Columbia and McGill in Canada’s top four. Among medical doctoral universities, McMaster is ranked first in student services, second in total research dollars and grants and third in library acquisitions.

McMaster also climbed to fifth position in its ranking for Student Experiences, and held the same position in Maclean’s reputation rankings, continuing to build on positive trends in recent rankings around the world.

“McMaster’s position in Maclean’s rankings reflects our commitment not just to our students, but to advancing health, well-being and sustainability,” says President David Farrar.

“It also reaffirms that the work our students, our researchers and our partners are doing here and around the world continues to make a genuine difference in our communities.”

In September, McMaster was named one of the world’s top 70 universities, climbing to 69th position in the Times Higher Education rankings.

Earlier this year, Times Higher Education ranked McMaster 17th in the world for its impact at home and globally. The University Impact Rankings are based on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a call to action to end poverty and hunger, protect the planet, and to address the most pressing challenges of our time.

For the past three years, McMaster has been named Canada’s most research-intensive university by Research InfoSource.
