McMaster Engineering announces new faculty appointments spring 2019April 10, 2019

We are pleased to announce the following new appointments to the Faculty of Engineering.

Fei Geng
Assistant Professor, Walter G. Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology
Appointment: March 2019

Photo of Fei GentFei Geng has recently accepted a faculty appointment as an assistant professor on the teaching-track, commencing March 1, 2019. He graduated from Jining Medical College in China in 2001. While practicing clinical medicine as an intern, Geng realized there was a lack of effective therapy for diseases, such as cancer, and decided to develop his career in research on cancer therapeutics. In 2004, Geng received his Master’s degree in Biochemistry at Fudan University where he specialized in the research areas of cancer biology, biochemistry, and cell biology.

In 2004, Geng came to Canada and started his PhD studies on the molecular mechanisms of breast cancer cell death under the supervision of David Andrews and Brian Leber in the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University. During his PhD studies, Geng discovered a novel cancer cell death signaling pathway, which could be utilized to treat the recurrent breast cancer that is resistant to chemotherapy. From 2012 to 2013 he worked for SGS Life Sciences as a Scientist in biotechnology.

In May 2013, Geng returned to McMaster University as an assistant professor (CLA) in the Bachelor of Technology Program. Geng has extensive teaching experience and has been a recipient of the Dean’s Honour Roll on multiple occasions. He is active in pedagogical and domain research and serves as the primary supervisor of the International Genetically Engineer Machine (iGEM) organization team at McMaster. iGEM is an annual synthetic biology competition primarily for undergraduate students.

New Adjunct Faculty Appointments

Armen Baronian has been appointed as an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering effective February 1, 2019 for a five-year term. Baronian joined DPS Inc. in 1998 as a senior electrical engineer. He was also an active member of the Centre for Applied Power Electronics (CAPE) at the University of Toronto from 1998 until 2011 when he joined Eaton Corporation as a Power Conversion Senior Specialist. Baronian has more than 20 years of experience in the fields of electronics, power conversion and advanced controls. He has been involved as a project leader in developing the advanced power, control and communication platforms that are used for power supplies used in Grid-Connected Battery Storage Systems and Utility Scale Solar Inverters. At the present time, he is a principal investigator for vehicle electrification, aircraft electrification and medium-voltage grid-connected power-converter programs within Corporate Research and Development of Eaton. His previous experiences include consulting work done for companies such as Canamet, Ford, Xerox, Hewlett-Packard, REDA, SRE and Inverpower. Baronian is a senior member of IEEE.

Jennifer Long has been appointed as an adjunct assistant professor in the Walter G. Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology effective February 1, 2019 for a three-year term. Long recently accepted a faculty position with Grant MacEwan University in the Department of Anthropology, Economics, and Political Science. She will be collaborating with Rajabzadeh, Apostolou, and Jones as well as professors Mackenzie and Tanu Halim on pedagogical research and will continue to co-supervise graduate students with Fleisig.
