Lucy Casacia’s job is to help clients find smart ways to achieve their goals.
As VP of Smart Solutions with WSP Canada, she works with both private companies and public agencies to find ways to use data and technology to make life easier, safer, more efficient and more sustainable.
“I help our clients adopt technology to reach their goals faster,” says the 1985 Metallurgy & Materials Science grad. “The possibilities are endless – people have different problems to solve.”
From optimizing the efficiency of garbage pickup and fleet management, to analyzing data from red-light cameras to reduce accidents, to developing apps that encourage the use of recreational spaces, she says there are a myriad of ways to integrate technology into traditional infrastructure.
Her work in the consulting field caps a career that started at Dofasco and has taken Casacia through leadership positions in several industries.
Highlights include co-developing and commercializing a patented technology and spending five years leading engineering and capital projects at a diamond mine in the Northwest Territories.
Casacia, who describes herself as a curious life-long learner, has spent most of the last five years advising large organizations on ways to rethink their work.
“I’m happy to have a very dynamic job that demands both strategic thinking and problem-solving,” she says. “No day is the same, so it’s a really a great way to stay motivated and energized.”
Casacia also brings her years of experience to mentoring, both internally with WSP and externally, through the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers and IEEE Women in Leadership.
“I try to be a mentor whenever I can because I find it really rewarding to share my knowledge and insights, and help people with their career development,” she says.
She urges young people to seek out mentors and coaches, and to build skills in areas like communication and project management.
“It’s often non-tech skills that are the most critical to our success.”
