Meet McMaster’s Spring 2023 honorary degree recipients

It takes a community of people to build a community for people.
As a development manager with the Daniels Corporation, a Toronto-based developer and builder, Jill Merriman works as part of an integrated team seeking to build vibrant communities.
“My current projects include student housing, seniors housing, and residential condominiums,” says Merriman, a 2008 Civil Engineering & Society grad.
“I work with a variety of consultants, including engineers, architects, and urban planners, to bring projects from conception through to completion,” she adds. “Daniels is a very collaborative workplace, and I also work closely with our construction, marketing, and finance teams.”
After graduating with her engineering degree, Merriman went to McGill to earn a master’s in urban planning.
Afterward, she co-founded Made in Montreal, a non-profit organization seeking to support Montreal’s manufacturing community and promote the consumption of locally made goods.
“It was a great learning experience to start something from the ground up,” says Merriman, who then spent four years working for LiveWorkLearnPlay, a Montreal-based planning and development consultant.
That position took her across Canada and the United States, providing economic development strategies and planning solutions to towns, cities, developers, and institutions.
Merriman says her role with Daniels has reconnected her with her engineering training.
“It’s a really great company and an excellent fit for me,” she says. “I spend a lot of time working with engineers and discussing reports, plans, and drawings.”
“My engineering education provided a solid foundation for my career, where I have generally worked as part of a team to solve problems.”
She urges today’s students to learn about the range of opportunities available to them.
“Industries are constantly evolving and your career path may look very different from what you think it will when you graduate.”
