Some of Evan Smith’s most memorable university lessons came not from the classroom, but from the rugby pitch.
A member of the successful men’s varsity rugby team for his six years at McMaster, Smith says the experience shaped his view on hard work and success.
“I was a walk-on to the team and many of the players were recruited with provincial and national team experience,” he says. “I had the opportunity to work my way up from the bottom and see how when you dedicate yourself to something, you can achieve success.”
The team captured championship titles in both 2008 and 2010, with Smith playing a starting role during the entire 2010 season.
“I consider this one of my proudest accomplishments,” says the 2013 Mechanical Engineering & Management grad.
He now applies those lessons of teamwork to his role as General Manager with his family’s business, Berenson Hardware.
“Figuring out how to work with people every day to get everyone pointed in the same direction is a great challenge,” he says. “I am passionate about bringing people together and uniting around a common cause, for the betterment of all.”
Smith is the third generation in his family to work in the business, which supplies imported cabinet hardware to the cabinet design and manufacturing industries.
He says that both his engineering education and his experience working in mechanical design and automotive manufacturing equip him to help the family firm thrive today and into the future.
“I’ve learned to have an eye for detail, and to design effective and efficient products and processes — skills that are especially helpful when managing systems and people.”
