EMBER program prepares first year enginerering students for academic and social success May 20, 2020

This summer, incoming first year students can get a head start with a two-week online program that combines live tutorials, self-paced learning and networking events.

EMBER, which stands for Engineering Mentorship & Bridging Education Resources, runs from August 10 to 21 and introduces students to foundational concepts of engineering with courses in math, physics and chemistry.

Created by students, for students, the course content is delivered through daily live tutorials led by seven upper year engineering students. Self-paced learning modules offer videos, quizzes and interactive simulations.

Tutorials are offered during six different time slots and students have the option of taking one, two or all three courses.

“The flexibility of this program allows students to complete the courses at their own pace, no matter what time zone they’re in,” says Vince Leung, assistant professor, chemical engineering and coordinator of the program.

Participants can also look forward to #FireballFamily Events which will help them get to know faculty, staff, students, clubs and teams and fellow incoming students as well as the many resources available to them.

“By the time students finish the program, they will know what McMaster Engineering is all about and they will have reviewed the essential tools they need to be successful starting in September,” says Associate Dean (Academic), Steve Hranilovic.

“The global pandemic has been challenging for all of us. High school students in transition to McMaster Engineering who have had their studies interrupted have many questions about their academic and social experiences during the year ahead,” adds Ishwar Puri, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

“This program is designed to ease their worries. It will support them and help make their transition to university a smooth one.  We will also benefit from welcoming them earlier than usual into our Fireball Family.”

Registration for EMBER opens in June. Check the EMBER website for the latest updates.
