Our final Administrative Professionals Day spotlight is Yousif Baython, Biotechnology Laboratory Technician. Yousif loved the Booth School so much, he came back twice! Read more about his passion for work and his future aspirations.
Why do you think it’s important to celebrate Administrative Professionals Day?
It is important to celebrate Administrative Professionals Day to acknowledge the achievements and goals that we made for the W Booth School throughout the year.
You graduated from the BTech biotechnology program, how does it feel to be back and working for the Booth School as a Laboratory Technician?
I feel very happy and excited to be back and working for the W Booth School as Biotechnology Laboratory Technician. I love my job because faculty and staff care about me as a person and about my professional growth. There is a genuine spirit of cooperation and shared goals all revolving around.
Describe a typical day in your role as a lab technician
On a typical day in the fall or winter term I usually prepare media and chemicals for lab instructors so students can use them for their experiments. I also carry out pre-lab preparation so students can perform the next steps of their experiments. I get help from lab assistants for preparation, organizing and cleaning the lab. Lastly, I communicate with lab instructors to see if there are any update needs for a specific experiment or purchasing materials.
A typical day in the summer includes: updating all fall and winter experiments, purchasing new materials and equipment for all Biolabs, and training new co-op students to help with organizing the lab, research and developing new experiments.
What do you love about working for SEPT?
I love working with the professors who supervised me during my undergraduate studies. As Biotechnology Laboratory Technician, I get the chance to see them every day and learn more from them.
Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
Biotechnology program is growing in Canada, and we have a new Biomanufacturing program that started this year. Overall, there is always a lot of area for growth at the W Booth School or anywhere on campus. In 10 years, I hope to have more responsibilities and be a part of helping the school reach its maximum potential.
