Due to popular demand, iBioMed's Design Like a Girl is Back! During Summer 2021, over 100 female-identifying high school students got hands-on experience with coding, electronics and sensors, design thinking, and delivering presentations and pitches, all while being mentored by upper-year iBioMed student mentors and faculty.

Overview

What is Design Like a Girl?

This two-day event introduces female-identifying high school students to various STEM fields and topics. Attendees will participate in a series of hands-on workshops to learn and develop various technical skills. Later, they will work in teams to develop a solution to a healthcare problem and pitch their final solutions to a panel of faculty and student judges. They will receive mentoring and coaching from upper-year iBioMed students and faculty throughout the two days.

FAQ

Who is eligible to participate in Design Like a Girl?

Design Like a Girl is open to all female-identifying high school students and non-binary students including cisgender and transgender women. Please note that you must be a high school student as of September 2022. i.e. Grade 12 students graduating this summer 2022, are not eligible for this event.

Why are only female-identifying students eligible to participate?

The gender gap in STEM is immense with women comprising of only 22% of engineers-in-training (EITs) in 2019, and overall only 17.9% of newly licensed engineers were women (Engineers Canada Report, 2020). Design Like a Girl aims to change the image of what someone in engineering and technology looks like by providing early exposure to STEM and creating a safe and supportive environment in which one can innovate and take risks.

Yes! Exact prizes are to be determined, but all participants (in-person and virtual) will have the chance to win a prize.

Do I have to register for both full days? Can I just register for one or two of the workshops?

To get the most out of this two-day event, participants are asked to committ to the full two-days. Registrations for individual workshops will not be accepted.

I have no previous experience. Can I still register?

Yes! No previous experience is necessary. Upper-year iBioMed student mentors will be available throughout this workshop to provide support along the way.

I won't know anybody - will we have to create our own teams?

Worried about joining or creating a team when you don't know anybody? That's why we're here! The Design Like a Girl Committee will be creating all of the teams. There will be lots of opportunities throughout the workshops for teammates to get to know one another before the actual designing begins. This will include ice-breaker activities and virtual breakout rooms. Plus, there will be upper-year iBioMed student mentors to help facilitate connections and get the conversations going!

I attended Design Like a Girl last year. Is it worth attending again this year?

Yes! This year we're offering new workshops in Python (not previously offered last year). For the in-person event, we will also be running iBioMed tours. You'll get a chance to check out iBioMed's Design Studio, labs and the McMaster campus. On Day Two, we will also be hosting an iBioMed Q&A panel where you can interact with current iBioMed students and have all of your iBio questions answered!

While there will be some of the same topics from last year, we've re-vamped a number of these workshops - plus you'll get to meet other high school and iBioMed students you may not have met last year.
