2022 Virtual Girl Guides of Canada Workshops- Venture Academy
Project Descriptions:
Sparks (Ages 5-6): Water Movers
This project will touch upon many of the United Nations Sustainable Goals, including Goal 6, Clean Water and Sanitation. Participants will learn about water and water delivery systems and its importance in their everyday lives. Participants will then design their own mini water tower system.
Brownies (Ages 7-8): Shake Don't Break
This project will focus on United Nations Goal 9, Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and United Nations Goal 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities. Participants will be learning about the fundamentals of seismic engineering and how to apply them structurally to design stable buildings. Participants will have the opportunity to mimic the natural phenomenon of liquefaction.
Guides (Ages 9-11): Reducing Recycling Randomness
This project will focus on United Nations Goal 10, Reduced Inequalities, and United Nations Goal 12, Responsible Consumption and Production. Participants will learn about how manufacturing design can aid Canada's recycling system through automation. We will use block coding to create recycling center models in Scratch.
Pathfinders (Ages 12-14): In the Mood for Food - Identifying Food Deserts
This project will focus on United Nations Goal 2, Zero Hunger, and United Nations Goal 10, Reduced Inequalities. Participants will explore how geographic locations with limited grocery resources can impact a community. Students use the coding language python to code a neighborhood with access to a limited number of stores. They are challenged with determining where the next store should be to avoid creating a food desert.
Rangers (Ages 15-17): Shivering Sensors
This project will focus on United Nations Goal 3, Good Health, and Well-Being. Participants will consist of designing a mock piece of wearable tech in the form of a temperature sensor on TinkerCAD. The sensor will notify the wearer when the temperature dips to a dangerous level.
