The ISW presents a framework for planning and delivering lessons, and provides a forum for participants to deliver participatory lessons to a small group of peers and reflect on a variety of feedback. Participants will each design and deliver participatory mini-lessons and provide constructive feedback on the lessons of others. Many experienced instructors use this workshop as a place for refining their ideas about education and trying out new approaches for their classes.

By completing this workshop, instructor participants will be able to:

  • Construct intended learning outcomes (ILOs)
  • Incorporate active learning strategies into lessons
  • Enhance lesson planning and delivery approaches
  • Collect and utilize feedback from learners about lesson delivery
  • Provide valuable and constructive feedback on others’ lessons

In response to the current remote work arrangements in place as a result of COVID-19, the MacPherson Institute has developed a fully virtual offering of the ISW.  With the virtual model they will offer a portion of the workshop asynchronously supported by synchronous session, spread out over a 4 to 6 week period.  The first, third and fourth sessions will each be an hour and the second session is 3-4 hours.  The synchronous sessions will be scheduled around the availability of the cohort.  All materials will be made available to participants as of July 14th and all cohorts can expect to have wrapped up their four sessions on or before August 24th.  In fulfilling the requirements of the ISW, participants will earn an internationally-recognized Instructional Skills Workshop certificate.

We recognize that this year presents some unique challenges as many of our faculty are preparing to offer courses virtually for the fall term.  If you are interested in attending the Engineering-specific ISW this summer, please select Yes on the registration form.  If you are unable to attend, please select No and Melec will contact you to provide information about future dates for the university-wide ISW.  As a reminder, all new faculty are required to attend a course design workshop and/or the internationally recognized Instructional Skills Workshop within the first two years of their faculty appointment.
