What's Love Got to Do with It? Educating the Professional of the Future

Dave Goldberg, ThreeJoy Associates, Inc. &

We live in fast-paced times and increasingly higher education is having trouble keeping up.  Employers seek “well-rounded” professional workers with  "communications, collaboration, and soft skills" in addition to technical skills, and students, parents, and a growing cadre of critics question the value of higher education.  At the same time, non-traditional institutions and entrepreneurs disrupt the status quo with new modalities, oftentimes using the internet and educational technology as a primary means of innovation. Borrowing from experiences in engineering education, this talks suggests that change is needed, but the missing variables in the education of 21st century professionals are not to be found in changes in content, curriculum, pedagogy, or EdTech. Instead the key change variables are deeply human and emotional; education must balance the teaching of knowledge with joy, courage, trust, connection, openness, and love.  The consequences of this view are explored, and practical means of achieving such changes are examined.

About Dave Goldberg:

In 2010, Dave Goldberg resigned his tenure and distinguished professorship at the University of Illinois to help transform engineering education and higher education more generally in alignment with the creativity imperative of the 21st century.  Author or co-author of over 400 papers and numerous books, including a pioneering artificial intelligence text with over 70,000 citations, Dave travelled to Asia, South America, Europe, and back to North America to unlock the keys to authentic transformation and thereby unleash a new generation of students. Using his background as the co-founder of a Silicon Valley start-up, his experience in starting an educational incubator for new programs, and his training as a leadership coach, Dave works with administrators, faculty, and students to bring a new level of student and faculty engagement to classrooms the world over.  Dave’s most recent book, A Whole New Engineer: The Coming Revolution in Engineering Education, is available in hardcover and e-book formats.  Dave hosts a weekly radio program, Big Beacon Radio, Transforming Higher Education on business channel every Monday at 1pm Eastern.
