Moltex Energy is striving to solve the world’s most critical challenge: providing sufficient clean, reliable and affordable energy. To achieve this Moltex is developing three unique technologies to meet the growing energy demands world-wide. A key innovation is that these technologies will ultimately consume up to 99% of the used nuclear inventory from previous reactors and use it to create more energy. This talk will outline the Moltex technology and its development both in Canada and abroad.

Dr. Andrew Ballard, Project Director at Moltex Energy.

Moltex Energy – Designing Nuclear for the Future.

Moltex Energy is striving to solve the world’s most critical challenge: providing sufficient clean, reliable, and affordable energy. In collaboration with innovators and energy experts, it is developing reactor technology that will help keep fossil fuels in the ground.

In 2018, Moltex was selected by NB Power and the Government of New Brunswick to progress the development of its technology in New Brunswick, with the goal of commercial operation next to Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station.

Moltex is developing nuclear technology with low enough capital and fixed operating costs to be profitable, that can operate at 30-50% capacity factor in unsubsidized competition with fossil fuels.

Moltex will achieve this by commercializing three unique technologies:

  • Stable Salt Reactor - Wasteburner (SSR-W): Fast reactor that uses nuclear waste as fuel.
  • WAste To Stable Salt (WATSS): Process for recycling nuclear waste to produce SSR-W fuel.
  • GridReserve: Thermal energy storage tanks, enabling the SSR-W to act as a peaking plant.

Andrew Ballard joined Moltex in May 2020. After earning a PhD in nuclear engineering from the University of Tokyo, Andrew joined Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan and worked on several new build and pre-licensing projects for builds in Sweden, Finland and Turkey. Andrew moved back to the UK to run the Owners Engineer program for the Moorside nuclear new build. Immediately prior to joining Moltex, Andrew was the Project Director for a tritium processing facility. Outside of work, Andrew enjoys spending time with his family, especially outdoors.
