Engineering transformational transactions

Former McMaster Engineering Society (MES) president Joshua Wong is now in New York, building a career in investment banking.

Wong, who headed up the MES in 2003-04 and then served as national president of the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students (CFES) during his graduating year in 2005-06, says his career path has been a bit of a surprise.

“I knew I wanted to leverage my degree to be in a technology related field but didn't realize I'd be more on the ‘Mgt’ side of my degree then the ‘Eng’ side,” he says.

Wong headed toward the management side shortly after graduation, adding an MBA to his resume in 2011.

After starting in investment banking with Scotiabank in Toronto, he moved join Morgan Stanley in Times Square in New York City. He currently works at JEGI, a boutique mergers and acquisitions (M&A) advisory firm focusing on media and technology.

“The best thing about my field – even at an entry level – is that we work with senior executives doing transformational transactions -- buying and selling companies. The workload can be intense, but it is very satisfying and rewarding to advise companies in M&A.”

He says a career highlight so far has been advising FMAV, Canada’s top audio visual and event technology services company, on its sale to PSAV – a global leader in the space – in a deal that closed in October 2018.

Being involved with the student engineering associations while at school provided a way to gain a national and international perspective while staying tied to his roots at McMaster, says Wong.

He urges students to extend their opportunities to learn beyond their courses.

“Always go into your classes thinking about how knowledge can be applied and how you can be ‘useful’ to other people,” he suggests. “But also spend time outside of classes, getting an ‘education’ outside of the classroom through participation in your interests like clubs, societies and teams.”
