The continuity of service of energy conversion systems and in particular, electro-mechanical energy converters and micro grids plays an important role in electrification of transportation systems. This includes fault detection, fault-tolerant control, stability and reliability of the above-mentioned systems. Put together, these topics have got significant attention. As an example, high standards in reliability is a must in more electric aircraft. Indeed, the aircraft industry is undergoing a deep revolution, in which not only most actuators, but also propulsive motors are being electrified. The aim is to enhance reliability and propulsion efficiency, and reduce maintenance costs and environmental impact. For vital functions like flight control system and landing system, the target mean time between failures (MTBF) for electric actuators is 10,000 times more than conventional electric drives. To get there, the aircraft industry has to develop new electronic, electrical and mechanical components, and look at new means to monitor them throughout their operating life. Hence, the reliability of power electronic converters, electric machines and nano/micro grids is increasingly more important in modern aircraft.

Dr. Babak Nahid-Mobarakeh is a Professor at McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. He received the Ph.D. degree from “Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine” (INPL, France) in 2001 in Electrical Engineering. From 2001 to 2006, he was with "Université de Picardie" as an Assistant then Associate Professor. In September 2006, he joined "Université de Lorraine" as an Associate Professor, then Professor in 2016. He is the author or coauthor of more than 250 peer-reviewed international journal and conference papers. Currently, he is the General Chair of ITEC 2020 (IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo). Between 2012 and 2019, he served as Secretary, Vice Chair, Chair and Past Chair of the Industrial Automation and Control Committee (IACC) of the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS). He also was the IACC Committee Administrator and a Paper Review Chair of IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications.

Dr. Nahid-Mobarakeh's main research topics are related to the continuity of service in electrical systems and his main contributions are:

Stability analysis and stabilization of microgrids:
- Large-signal and small-signal stability of AC and DC microgrids
- Centralized and distributed stabilizing control and energy management in microgrids
- Online identification for stabilization and control of microgrids

Fault detection in electric systems:
- Online parameter identification for fault detection
- Fault detection and isolation in distributed electrical systems
- State of Charge and State of Health estimation for batteries

Electric drives:
- Fault-tolerant power electronic architectures for AC drives
- PWM techniques and torque ripples suppression in multi-phase machines
- Sensor failure in AC drives
