McMaster professor’s influential contributions honouredNovember 28, 2019

Electrical & Computer Engineering professor Shiva Kumar has been elected as has been elected Fellow of the Optical Society (FOSA).

Kumar, an expert in the area of fibre optic communication systems, is the first member of the McMaster community to achieve this award.

His election as a 2020 OSA Fellow recognizes his “seminal contributions to linear and nonlinear fiber optics, specifically to fiber design, soliton communications and understanding of stimulated Brillouin scattering in fibers," noted Tim Davidson, chair of the department of Electrical & Computer Engineering.

Kumar is one of only 94 members elected to the society’s 2020 Fellow class. In 2010, when he was named an OSA senior member, Kumar was the only Canadian among 50 senior members named from 16 countries for the new membership distinction.

“Being named an OSA Fellow is a singular honor and indicates a history of achievement in optics and photonics, and a reputation for service to OSA and our field,” said OSA president Ursula Gibson.
