McMaster Engineering announces new faculty and post-doctoral fellow appointments - Fall 2019September 17, 2019

We are pleased to announce the following new appointments to the Faculty of Engineering.

New assistant professor faculty appointments

Cancan Yang

Civil Engineering

Dr. Cancan Yang received her PhD in Civil Engineering (Structural and Earthquake Engineering) in 2019 at University at Buffalo, the State University of New York (UB). She obtained her Bachelor's Degree and Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Chongqing University (China) and UB respectively.

Dr. Yang’s research focuses on highway bridge engineering, specifically regarding precast concrete bridges. She uses experimental and computational methods to investigate structural systems and materials that can reduce earthquake-induced damage to precast concrete bridges. Her research contributes to deploying accelerated bridge construction in seismic regions.

Dr. Ratnasingham Tharmarasa (Thamas) received his B.Sc.Eng. degree in electronic and telecommunication engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 2002, and M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from McMaster University, Canada in 2004 and 2008, respectively. Currently, Thamas is an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at McMaster University. From January 2010 to August 2019 he was a Research Associate in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at McMaster University. His main areas of expertise are target tracking, information fusion, sensor resource management and performance prediction with application to surveillance systems, autonomous vehicles and intelligent transportation.

Thamas has published 44 peer-reviewed journal articles and 65 conference papers in the above areas, in addition to three book chapters. He has mentored the research works of 8 visiting professors, 27 PhD students, 10 visiting PhD students, 25 Master’s students and 25 undergraduate research students. He has also worked on the development of many real-world target tracking, sensor fusion and resource management systems. He has consulted to the Canadian Department of National Defense, General Dynamics and Thales. Thamas was a Co-Chair for the Canadian Tracking and Fusion Group Workshop in 2017 and 2018. Also, he was the Co-Chair for Special Sessions for the 2019 International Conference on Information Fusion.

Kyla Sask

Materials Science & Engineering

Dr. Kyla Sask is joining the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at McMaster University as an Assistant Professor in September 2019. She obtained her B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Queen’s University and her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at McMaster University.

Dr. Sask worked at Interface Biologics Inc. (IBI) for several years as a Research Engineer. IBI is a commercial stage company that develops innovative materials for improving the efficacy of medical devices and targeted delivery of drugs. Dr. Sask recently completed a postdoctoral research fellow in the Advanced Biomaterials Laboratory at Queen’s University. Her research interests are in biomaterials, surface modification and characterization, protein and cell interactions, nanostructured materials, biofouling and blood contacting devices.

New adjunct faculty appointments

Omid Beik has been appointed as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering effective September 1, 2019 for a five-year term.  Dr. Beik is a program manager with the Stronach Centre for Innovation within Magna International. He manages research and development projects in the area of electrified power trains for transportation applications.  He will collaborate with members of the McMaster Automotive Resource Centre.   

Pawel Malysz has been appointed as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering effective October 1, 2019 for a five-year term.  Dr. Malysz is a Senior Technical Specialist with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. In that role he performs research and development of advanced battery management and control technologies for automotive applications.  He will collaborate with researchers in the McMaster Automotive Resource Centre.   

Navid Zargari (FIEEE) has been appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering effective October 1, 2019 for a five-year term.  Dr. Zargari is the Manager, Motor Control Architecture, with Rockwell Automation Canada. He leads their research and development projects in the area of medium-voltage motor drives.  He will collaborate with Dr. Mehdi Narimani, and other researchers in the areas of power electronics and electric machines.  

New associate member appointments

Kyla Sask in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering has an Associate Member appointment in the School of Biomedical Engineering effective September 1, 2019 for a three-year term.

Visiting faculty appointments

André Yamina will be a Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering Physics effective September 1, 2019 until August 31, 2020.

Luis César Fontana will be a Visiting Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering effective September 2, 2019 until September 1, 2020.

Xuewei Zhang will be a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering effective October 1, 2019 until September 30, 2020.
