As of August 10th 2020, McMaster University has moved to Phase 2: Return to Research Activity 

Under Phase 2, remote working remains the preference and, currently, a return to campus remains voluntary for researchers. The research community will be advised if this changes. In keeping with current supervisory responsibilities, researchers will retain responsibility for their research teams. All appropriate safety protocols must be in place before researchers and any required staff return to campus or the field.

Online Request for Access to Campus (Research Activity Plan Submission)

Preparing for a return to the lab: Faculty members and directors of research centres and institutes across campus are required to submit a plan for return to research activities for approval by their Associate Dean Research. All department chairs will have access to all forms in the database for the purpose of reviewing any activity, building occupancy relevant to their department(s). 

Directors of research centres and institutes should submit a separate application if requesting that the research centre or institute resume operations during phase one, in addition to any request for access to their personal research spaces.

 

The application should include:

  • A detailed SOP for maintaining distance, safety and cleanliness in the lab,  either written into the body of the application or provided as an external link in the Health and Safety section 

  • A listing of all members of the research team who are expected to require access to the research space

  • A listing of all research spaces that they plan to access including individual rooms (*Note: Access to any shared spaces within the Faculty or across the University will require permission from of the owner of the space, per the usual process).

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       

Faculty of Engineering Guidelines For Approved Research Teams

Only those listed on the approval form are permitted to return to campus for research activities and should note the following:

  • Once plans are approved by the ADR, PIs are asked to consider visiting campus with senior members of their research teams to survey any changes that may need to be made to their spaces, followed by a group meeting to discuss specific details to ensure the space meets the University’s standards for the safe return to research.  (i.e.  best entrance, exits, signage in building, access to building, sanitation processes, reconfiguration of the space to maintain distance, etc) 
  • Access to any shared spaces still requires permission from the owner of the space as per the usual defined protocols. If you have listed a shared space on your form, you are required to seek approval for access prior to returning to research.  

Before returning to campus, all members of the research team must complete the checklists related to their roles.

Note: It is the supervisor/PI’s responsibility to ensure that team members are completing these checklists as required however it is not required for physical copies of the checklists to be retained.  In keeping with traditional Health and Safety procedures, it will remain at the discretion of the supervisor/PI to request a signed copy from each approved member of the research team before they come to campus, if they should wish to do so.

Building Access

All Engineering-affiliated buildings will remain locked during this phase.  

Card Access will be provided by The Hub to approved researchers and students. This request must come from the PI and must cc engadr@mcmaster.ca.  

If a member of the research team is submitting the request to The Hub on behalf of the PI, proof of the PI’s approval to return to research is required (e.g. copy of PI’s email approval from ADR).

MacSafe Web & Mobile App for Research Groups

As an additional resource to help supervisors to manage the safe return of their research groups, the University is developing MacSafe, a web-based and mobile app that will allow each research group to individually manage their group’s access to campus in keeping with the University’s policies and guidelines like the checklists noted above.

Supervisors will register and will add their research spaces. Research teams will be able to use to the app to check in and out from their spaces and can log their time on campus, to help supervisors and team members maintain physical distance and their team’s SOPs.
