Dr. Younggy Kim awarded Early Researcher Award (ERA)June 14, 2017

Dr. Younggy Kim awarded ERA for "Heavy Metal Removal Using Microbial Electrochemistry" research.

Dr. Younggy Kim, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, has been awarded an Early Researcher Award (ERA). The award is designed to help recently appointed reserachers build their research teams of undergraduates, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research assistants, associates, and technicians. Each ERA garners $100,000 from the Government of Ontario, and is matched by $50,000 from the University. Dr. Kim's project title is "Heavy Metal Removal Using Microbial Electrochemistry."

Dr. Kim's group will investigate toxic heavy metal removal mechanisms and efficiencies via electrochemical, biological, and physico-chemical reactions in microbial electrochemistry cells. The team will also research pilot-scale designs of the cells for energy-efficient separation of toxic heavy metals from various wastewater streams.
