Darius Remesat, BEngMgt. '93

(Chemical Engineering) | Creating value and gaining knowledge

Translating Darius Remesat’s career into a few paragraphs isn’t an easy thing to do.

“I’ve been an engineer, R&D associate, manager, director, vice-president – work titles don’t really define what I do and the value I bring,” says Remesat, whose current job titles include Innovation and Development Manager for MEG Energy, and assistant adjunct professor at the University of Calgary.

Since earning his B.Eng in Chemical Engineering and Management in 1993, Remesat has worked in a number of positions in the oil and gas industry while earning his MBA in Strategic Planning and his MSc and PhD in Chemical Engineering.

“I’ve been named on 23 patents, with one currently providing both economic and environmental benefits to the Canadian oil sands,” says Remesat. “Eight additional patents are pending, with the potential to generate billions of dollars of wealth yearly for Alberta and Canada.”

His most recent venture with MEG Energy involves the development of an innovative field upgrading technology that makes it cheaper to bring bitumen to market by removing the need for the use of an expensive diluent in the transportation process.

Along with cutting production costs by a third, the technology creates a new Alberta medium sour crude oil that will fetch a higher market price than diluted bitumen.

Remesat’s role over the last five years with MEG has seen him working with a small team on fundamental R&D, application R&D, process design, market analysis, and business development –“pretty much everything from my Chem Eng and Management program,” he says.

He says his hope is to see the technology through to full commercialization before he takes on the challenge of “finding the next opportunity that provides me with the same level of satisfaction.”

He adds that his career highlights include the opportunities he’s had over the last decade to mentor up and coming engineers in his role at the University of Calgary.
