Two Faculty Elected Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineering
June 03, 2010
Two members of the Faculty of Engineering will be inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering on June 3 at a ceremony being held in Toronto.
David Wilkinson, dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and Shiping Zhu, chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering, are the most recent members of the Faculty to be elected Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (FCAE). They join 11 of their colleagues and peers from the Faculty who have been recognized with this distinction since the Academy was established in 1987
The Canadian Academy of Engineering is the national institution through which Canada's most distinguished and experienced engineers provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to Canada. Founded in 1987, the Academy presently has more than 300 active members, 125 emeritus members and three honorary members.
Members of the Academy are nominated and elected by their peers to honorary Fellowships for their distinguished achievements and career-long service to the engineering profession.
Dean Wilkinson is a distinguished university professor at McMaster, and is one of the world’s foremost experts in the mechanical behaviour of materials. He founded the GM Canada Centre for Automotive Materials and Corrosion and co-founded the Initiative for Automotive Manufacturing Innovation (IAMI) with the University of Waterloo.
Dean Wilkinson is a member of Professional Engineers Ontario and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and also holds fellowships in the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and the American Ceramic Society. He received his undergraduate degree in Engineering Science from the University of Toronto and his PhD in Engineering Materials from the University of Cambridge.
Dr. Zhu is Canada Research Chair in Polymer Science and Engineering and professor of chemical engineering at McMaster. He is a world leading expert in polymer reaction engineering and has made major contributions to understanding and development of advanced polymerization technologies and to establishing polymer structure-property relationships. His group has published more than 200 original refereed journal papers, receiving over 4,000 SCI citations. He is a recipient of a Premier’s Research Excellence Award for researchinto theoretical and experimental contributions in the fields of polymer science and engineering.
Dr. Zhu is a member of Professional Engineers Ontario, the Canada Society of Chemical Engineers, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society, and an elected Fellow of Chemical Institute of Canada. He received his Bachelor of Engineering degree from Zhejiang University and PhD from McMaster University.
