Alumnus takes helm of Nokia

Stephen Elop, a graduate of the computer engineering and management program (1986) at McMaster, has been named president and chief executive officer of Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia. His appointment is effective September 21. Elop is currently head of the business division of Microsoft Corp, based in California.

Mr. Elop is a strong supporter of the Faculty. He has regularly visited the University to give talks on technology and business, and is a mentor in the Master's of Engineering Entrepreneurship and Innovation program. To recognize his contributions, he received an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree in 2009, a L.W. Shemilt Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award in 2007, and has a classroom in his name in the new Engineering Technology Building.
