New Faculty Welcomed

A reception at the University Club today welcomed new faculty members who have joined McMaster’s Faculty of Engineering during the past year.
Among the recent appointments is Alan Murray who was appointed executive director of the McMaster-Mohawk Bachelor of Technology Partnership (B.Tech.) in April. Five assistant professors also joined the Bachelor of Technology Partnership as the program continues to expand with a growing number of students.
A new faculty member also joined the Department of Engineering Physics this year. Prof. Adriaan Buijs adds to the strong core of nuclear engineering expertise at McMaster, as student interest in sustainable energies continues to grow.
Adriaan Buijs, Professor of Engineering Physics
Prof. Buijs joined the Faculty from Atomic Energy of Canada,
Limited, where he was the manager of the core design of AECL’s
new reactor, the Advanced CANDU Reactor. At McMaster, he is teaching
the physics of nuclear reactors and undertaking research in the physics
and analysis of advanced reactor designs.
Alan Murray, Executive Director of the McMaster-Mohawk
Bachelor of Technology Partnership and CLA Lecturer
Alan Murray is the founder of Burlington, Ontario-based TriFusion
Consulting. From 1999 to 2007, he served as Gennum Corporation’s
VP of Human Resources. For seven years beginning in 2000, he was
also a sessional instructor in the Faculty of Business where he taught
Strategic Management of Technology to MBA students.
Monica Sauer, CLA Assistant Professor, Program
Chair for Biotechnology, McMaster-Mohawk Bachelor of Technology Partnership
Prof. Sauer completed her Ph.D. in biology at the University
of California at San Diego. She has also completed two postdoctoral
fellowships at the University of California at San Francisco and York University. Most
recently, she taught in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University
of Windsor.
Dan Centea, CLA Assistant Professor, Program
Chair for Automotive and Vehicle Technology, McMaster-Mohawk Bachelor
of Technology Partnership
Prof. Centea completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering
at McMaster University. He has been teaching in B.Tech.’s Manufacturing
Engineering Technology Degree Completion program for many years.
Andrew Willems, CLA Assistant Professor, McMaster-Mohawk
Bachelor of Technology Partnership
Prof. Willems earned his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto followed by a postdoctoral
fellowship at the Lunenfeld Research Institute in Toronto. He then completed
a three-year postdoctoral fellowship at McMaster with Drs. Nodwell and Junop. Prof.
Willems was most recently assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry
at McMaster. He is teaching in the four-year Biotechnology Program.
Konstantinos Apostolou, CLA Assistant Professor,
McMaster-Mohawk Bachelor of Technology Partnership
Prof. Apostolou has been an instructor in the Department of Chemical
Engineering at McMaster University since 2005 while also holding a postdoctoral
fellow/research associate appointment working with Dr. Hrymak. He is teaching
in the four-year Process Automation Technology Program.
Lucian Balan, CLA Assistant Professor, McMaster-Mohawk
Bachelor of Technology Partnership
Prof. Balan completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at McMaster
in 2006. He was also Research Engineer in the Robotics Lab from 2001-2006,
and most recently a Sessional Professor at Mohawk College in Engineering
Technology. Prof. Balan is teaching in the four-year Automotive and
Vehicle Technology Program.
