Imagine. Free parking for a whole year. And almost right outside your office door. Well, Janet Delsey's generosity is letting her live that dream. Janet, who is supervisor of the DocuCentre in the Faculty of Engineering, won first prize in the McMaster United Way annual lottery, which entitles her to one free year of parking in the space of her choice anywhere on campus.

"I'm absolutely thrilled!" says Janet.

A former United Way committee volunteer, Janet continued her support of the charity with her purchase of a lottery ticket. Though it paid off big this time, Janet says she's just happy to support a worthwhile cause.

"I bought the ticket because of the great work the United Way does in our city," she says. "I enjoy giving back to the local community."

Marina MacLean, a Campus Health Centre staff member, took home the second prize of a one year membership to the Pulse, and Kaye Mitton won the third prize, a $250 gift certificate to Titles Bookstore.

"I enjoy helping others, especially those in need," says Mitton, an office administration support staff member in the Department of Pediatrics. "I was very excited to receive my prize, as I purchase a lot of lottery tickets but I never win."

McMaster alumnus and long time United Way supporter Gord McNulty was given the fourth prize of a $100 gift certificate to Hospitality Services. McNulty, who bought the winning ticket at an alumni open house before Christmas, says that while winning is great, he just finds it rewarding to support such a great charitable cause.

"It plays an essential role in building a healthier, stronger community," he says. "Without United Way funding, human service agencies would find it very difficult to improve the quality of life for many people who need help." This year's lottery showed a 56% increase in donations, raising $3000 for the United Way's 2008 campaign.

As the campaign comes to a close, the United Way is asking the McMaster community to continue their generous support. If you'd like to help make sure they meet their funding goals, contact Michele Corbeil at 905-525-9140, ext. 23865 or at corbeil@mcmaster.ca.
