Remembering Professor George Round

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Professor George F. Round on Monday, January 21, 2012.

George was a long-time member of the department of Mechanical Engineering at McMaster.  He gave his life to education, his family and the arts. George was born and raised in Dudley, England and attended the prestigious Dudley Grammar School. He then attended the University of Birmingham and studied chemical engineering graduating with a Ph.D. During the course of his studies he met his future wife, Jean Codling, and they married in 1956.

George, Jean and Mark moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 1957 where he worked as a Research Officer at the Alberta Research Council until 1967 specializing in fluid dynamics, pipeline and pumping systems design. In 1968 the family moved to Burlington, Ontario and George served as a full professor in the department of Mechanical Engineering until 1995, serving as departmental chairman from 1970-1973.

George was an adventurer and world traveller. During the course of his career he was a visiting professor at Cambridge University, Kuwait University, University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Missouri-Columbia. His prodigious work output included over 125 scientific papers, 5 books, and 6 patents. George had both a scientific and artistic mind.

A man of many talents he was a rousing orator, a stage actor and director. George worked on numerous theatre productions in Edmonton and in the Burlington-Hamilton area. He was committed to family and thoroughly enjoyed travelling with Jean and time spent with his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered as a strong contributor to the academic and arts communities and as a beloved family man.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, 1371 Elgin Street, Burlington on Thursday January 26, 2012 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow the service at the parish hall of St. Luke’s.
