Accolades, Awards, Applause Aplenty

Achievements in steel, water and communications garnered special recognition but there were also plenty of accolades for the more than 50 faculty and students who earned awards over the past year.

The Faculty of Engineering held its eighth annual Applause & Accolades Awards Celebration on Thursday, May 12 at LIUNA Station.  More than 200 guests were in attendance to applaude the accomplishments of their colleagues.

Special award recipients during the evening included:

  • Juergen Schachler, president and CEO, ArcelorMittal Dofasco who was presented with the Faculty of Engineering Leadership Award;
  • Pierre Côté, president, Côté Membrane Separation Ltd. and former chief technology officer, Zenon Environmental Ltd., who was presented with the L.W. Shemilt Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award (Ph.D. ’86, Civil Engineering);
  • Kon Max Wong, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Canada Research Chair in Signal Processing, McMaster University, who was presented with the Faculty of Engineering Research Achievement Award.

Mr. Schachler was appointed president and CEO of Hamilton-based steel maker ArcelorMittal Dofasco in May 2007. As the company approaches its 100th anniversary in 2012, Mr. Schachler reflected back on the many research collaborations, student co-op and internship placements, and full-time employment opportunities between the two partners over the years. Dean David Wilkinson presented the award.

Dr. Côté was recognized for his breakthrough discoveries in water purification membranes. This work was seeded while he was a PhD student at McMaster and then expanded as he continued his studies and began working for his PhD supervisor, Dr. Andrew Benedek, at ZENON Environmental, now part of GE Power & Water. Dr. Les Shemilt, the award’s name sake, made the award presentation.

Dr. Kon Max Wong was recognized for his work in advancing the science and technology of signal processing. His leading-edge research involving detecting, estimating, classifying, and designing signals for communication, radar and biomedical systems have contributed greatly to improved wireless communication systems. Dr. Peter Mascher, Associate Dean (Research and External Relations) presented the award.
