Graduate Work Experience Option


A term of work experience can be a great addition to your master's or doctoral studies. Students benefit by gaining valuable industry experience with leading engineering employers. Employers benefit by having access to a highly qualified talent pool of graduate students eager to put theory into practice.

Our Career Development and Relationship Manager establishes strong relationships with top engineering employers, facilitates connections between students and employers, provides career-planning tools and resources, and provides opportunities for graduate students to gain industry experience while pursuing their degrees.

Graduate Students

Benefits of Participating in a Work Experience Opportunity

As a graduate student you will gain paid, relevant work experience, establish a network of industry contacts, earn income, and develop valuable skills as well as learn how to market those skills to future employers.

Requirements to Participate

  • Students must obtain their supervisor's approval to participate in a work term opportunity. Students are encouraged to discuss their interest in participating in the work experience option with their supervisor as early as possible.

  • Students must be enrolled full-time in a Master's or PhD program in the Faculty of Engineering.

  • Successful completion of required courses and comprehensive exam

  • Participation in a work term preparation meeting with the Career Development and Relationship Manager, Adam Pepler, is mandatory prior to starting the work term.

International Students

International students must have a valid work permit prior to starting their work term. Please refer to Citizenship and Immigration Canada's website for more information.

International students are highly encouraged to contact McMaster's International Student Services office. ISS provides international students advising services on CIC related matters through an Immigration Consultant. The Immigration Consultant provides assistance on study permits, work permits, TRVs and Permanent Residency on a first-come-first-serve basis. No appointments needed.

This work experience option will allow your organization to tap into a pool of highly qualified McMaster University engineering graduate students. We assist with all aspects of the recruiting process and also help to get your corporate "face" in front of hundreds of potential employees.

We do not charge the employer for our services, and there is no obligation to hire if you post with us. We maintain contact with you and the student during the work term and the required paperwork is minimal.

    By hiring a graduate student your company may be eligible for funding through Mitacs or a SR&ED tax credit. Please note at this time the option is not eligible for the Ontario Coop Tax Credit.

    Hiring a graduate student is similar to testing out your future employee before you hire them on a full-time basis. Many companies hire full-time employees from their previous pool of students.

    We will post your jobs for you on OSCARPlus, our on-line career site, and send you applications via email. When it is time to interview, we can arrange on-campus interviews and provide rooms at no cost. When you have made your decision, we will contact the students on your behalf.

  • Pre-Screening of Candidates

    Our on-line system allows us to pre-screen applicants for the specific disciplines and level that you are looking for. Students do not see your contact information - we take care of all the behind-the-scene details.

  • Support

    We will support both the student and the employer to ensure the success of the work term. This support may include a site visit.

  • On-Campus Promotions

    Our office can help you organize events, such as Information Sessions, or other on-campus events to get your company in front of hundreds of potential employees. Event venues can hold from 20 to 100 students - just let us know your needs and we will arrange it. See below for more information.

Recruitment Process

Step 1 - Post a Job

We will post your positions, collect applications (cover letter, resume and transcript) and forward these in .pdf format to you via an email link, the day after the job closing date. Positions are usually kept open for 8 to 10 business days but can be extended as needed.

We can also direct students to apply through your dedicated web-site. Just let us know what works best for you.

Email us your job description and we'll take care of the rest!

Step 2 - Arrange Interviews

We will schedule your interviews directly with the students (including on and off-campus, phone or video skype interviews). Select the candidates and set up interview details through our Career Development and Relationship Manager, Adam Pepler.

Step 3 - Extend an Offer

Once you have selected a candidate, we will happily extend the offer on your behalf.

On Campus Promotions

  • Info Sessions

    We can organize company information sessions throughout the year to spotlight your company to students.

  • Meet & Greet Sessions

    Discuss with our staff about setting up a booth in the lobby of the engineering building or utilizing the engineering lounge, for a meet & greet session. You can set-up displays, provide food and talk to the students in a more informal "drop-in" setting.

  • Career Fairs

    Our on-campus career fair occurs every September and March. Visit the Student Success Centre to find out more.
