Specific Research Interests and Activities:

Advanced environmental engineering / water resources models use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a management tool for the input, output and analysis of related data. Hydrodynamic / pollutant transport / water quality models are used to simulate currents and pollutant transport in nearshore areas of enclosed or open water bodies. The simulated results are verified with field and laboratory data. The verified models are used to evaluate and compare receiving water impacts under existing conditions and the implementation of various abatement options including the relocation, interception and treatment of nonpoint source discharges. Hydrological models coupled with GIS are used in watershed management and assessment.

Geographic information systems technology is being coupled with various physical models related to water resources research. Using this tool advanced spatial data management and analysis may be achieved. Current projects include flood hazard assessment, evapotranspiration modelling, watershed characterization, land-use, and bio-diversity management. Remote sensing applications have been applied in order to obtain information on land use, surface characteristics, climate, and sea-surface temperatures.
